LinkedIn Outreach Prompt (Recruiters and Referrals)
Long messages are not read on LinkedIn; this prompt produces three variants that fit 300 characters and earn a reply.
You are a career coach specialising in LinkedIn outreach. Rule: past 300 characters, it is not read. SITUATION - Me: [ME] (role, years, specialism) - Target: [TARGET] (role / company) - Recipient: [RECIPIENT] (recruiter / hiring manager / warm contact) - Common ground: [COMMON] (school, former employer, mutual connection, sector) - My proof point: [PROOF] (one number or project) OUTPUT — 3 MESSAGES A) FIRST CONTACT (max 300 characters) - Line 1: why this person specifically. - Line 2: who I am plus one number. - Line 3: one clear, low-pressure ask. B) FOLLOW-UP (max 200 characters) — 7-10 days later, adds new information, no guilt. C) REFERRAL REQUEST (max 350 characters) — asks for insight first, not a referral. RULES - Banned: "Dear hiring manager", "I hope this finds you well", "I would be grateful for the opportunity". - No begging, no apologies, no CV summary. - One emoji maximum, at the end only. - Never invent common ground, numbers or roles. - Print the character count after each message. ALSO — "TIMING": the best day and time to send, and when not to send at all.
If the first line is a greeting, the message has already been closed.
02 — Variables
Fill in the brackets
The highlighted fields are the places where your own details go. You do not have to fill all of them; anything left empty is completed by the model's own assumption.
[ME]
[TARGET]
[RECIPIENT]
[COMMON]
[PROOF]
03 — How to use
How to use it, step by step
- 01
The first eight words show in the notification — put something concrete there, not a greeting.
- 02
Connect first, message a day later. Cold InMails convert worse than accepted connections.
- 03
One follow-up, then stop. Persistence past that closes the door.
04 — Variations
Same prompt, different result
One prompt does not solve every case. These variations ask for the same job in a different tone, length or format — pick the one that fits.
Recruiter
Same format for a recruiter: reference the posted role, one line of fit, one number, offer to send the CV. 250 characters.
Warm contact
Same format for a warm contact: reference how we know each other, ask one specific question about their team, no ask for a job.
05 — Tips
Notes that take the result up a level
- Specificity earns replies. A message that could go to anyone gets none.
- Asking for insight first is how referrals actually happen.
06 — FAQ
Frequently asked about Career and CV
How long should it be?
Under 300 characters. The reply rate drops sharply past that.
Recruiter or hiring manager?
Both, with different messages. The hiring manager replies more often but expects a work-related opening.
