Midjourney Portrait Prompts: 12 Ready Templates
Twelve ready templates that produce portraits with natural skin, correct light direction and no plastic finish.
You are a portrait photographer writing Midjourney prompts. The goal: skin that looks like skin, light that has a direction, and eyes that are not dead. SUBJECT [WHO — age range, distinguishing feature, expression] SETTING: [STUDIO / WINDOW / STREET / OUTDOOR] MOOD: [MOOD] ASPECT: [--ar VALUE] RULES FOR PORTRAITS - Always specify the light direction and quality; without it Midjourney flattens the face. - Always specify the lens. 50mm for natural, 85mm for compression, 35mm for environmental. - Add a skin instruction: "visible pores, natural skin texture, no retouching". - Avoid "beautiful", "perfect skin", "hyperreal" — these produce the plastic look. - Keep hands out of frame unless they matter; they are the most common failure. OUTPUT — 6 PROMPTS, each in a different light setup 1) Window light, 85mm, shallow depth 2) Single softbox, 45 degrees, dark background 3) Overcast outdoor, 50mm, environmental 4) Golden hour backlight, rim light on hair 5) Hard midday sun, deep shadows, editorial 6) Mixed light: tungsten interior with daylight from a window For each: one line prompt, then the parameter line, then one line on what to expect. Then: 3 things to change if the face looks uncanny.
Portrait quality is light plus lens. Everything else is decoration.
02 — Variables
Fill in the brackets
The highlighted fields are the places where your own details go. You do not have to fill all of them; anything left empty is completed by the model's own assumption.

03 — How to use
How to use it, step by step
- 01
Name the light direction every time; it is the single biggest difference between a portrait and a passport photo.
- 02
Add "natural skin texture, visible pores" — it counteracts the default smoothing.
- 03
Generate four images per prompt before judging; the first grid is rarely the best.
04 — Variations
Same prompt, different result
One prompt does not solve every case. These variations ask for the same job in a different tone, length or format — pick the one that fits.
Black and white
Same setup, monochrome: state the contrast curve and grain, keep the light direction.
Environmental
Same subject, wider framing, 35mm, background that tells you who they are.
05 — Tips
Notes that take the result up a level
- Uncanny faces usually come from too many quality words. Remove "hyperrealistic, 8k, detailed skin" and the face improves.
- Hands and teeth are the two failure points. Frame them out unless the pose needs them.
06 — FAQ
Frequently asked about Midjourney Prompts
Why do Midjourney faces look plastic?
Because the model defaults to retouched beauty imagery. Explicit skin-texture and light-direction instructions override that default; quality adjectives reinforce it.
How do I keep the same face across images?
You cannot reliably with text alone. Use a reference image with character reference parameters, and accept that identity drifts.
