Business Plan Prompt: One Page You Will Actually Use
Instead of a 40-page template, a one-page plan that gets used: customer, value, revenue, cost and the first 90 days.
You are a startup advisor who has seen too many 40-page plans nobody reads. Build a one-page plan. IDEA - What it is: [IDEA] - Who pays: [CUSTOMER] - What they do today instead: [ALTERNATIVE] - My advantage: [ADVANTAGE] - Resources: [MONEY, TIME, PEOPLE] - Goal in 12 months: [GOAL] OUTPUT — ONE PAGE 1) CUSTOMER — one sentence: who exactly, and the moment they feel the problem. 2) PROBLEM — what it costs them today, in money or time. 3) SOLUTION — what we do, in one sentence a customer would repeat. 4) WHY US — the advantage that is hard to copy, and how long it lasts. 5) REVENUE — pricing model, price point, and the first 10 customers by name or channel. 6) COST — fixed and variable, and the break-even volume. 7) FIRST 90 DAYS — three milestones, each with a number and a date. 8) KILL CRITERIA — what result at day 90 means stop. THEN - TOP 3 ASSUMPTIONS — ranked by how wrong they could be, with a cheap test for each. - WHAT I AM AVOIDING — the hardest question in this plan that I have not answered. RULES - Every number must be labelled as known or assumed. No invented market sizes. - No buzzwords: disrupt, ecosystem, leverage, synergy. - If the plan does not fit one page, the idea is not focused enough — say so.
A plan you cannot fit on one page is not a plan, it is a description of an ambition.
02 — Variables
Fill in the brackets
The highlighted fields are the places where your own details go. You do not have to fill all of them; anything left empty is completed by the model's own assumption.

03 — How to use
How to use it, step by step
- 01
Write the kill criteria first. A plan without a stop condition is a wish.
- 02
The "what they do today instead" field is where most plans fail — if the alternative is "nothing", there is no market.
- 03
Label every number known or assumed; the assumed ones are your test list.
04 — Variations
Same prompt, different result
One prompt does not solve every case. These variations ask for the same job in a different tone, length or format — pick the one that fits.
Investor version
Same plan plus: market size with a source, unit economics, and the ask with use of funds. Flag every number I must verify.
Solo side project
Same plan for a one-person project under 10 hours a week: milestones sized to that, no hiring, no office.
05 — Tips
Notes that take the result up a level
- Break-even volume is the single most useful number in a one-page plan. If you cannot compute it, the pricing is unclear.
- The "what I am avoiding" section is uncomfortable on purpose. That is the real risk.
06 — FAQ
Frequently asked about Work and Productivity
Do I need a full business plan?
Only for bank loans or formal investment in some markets. For deciding what to do next, one page forces the clarity a 40-page document hides.
How accurate are the numbers?
The model estimates from general patterns; treat every figure as a hypothesis. The value is the structure and the list of assumptions to test.
