AI Recommending Products That Don't Exist: Verify the Model Number
Checks model number, release year and current availability separately, flags invented products and recommends a real alternative category.
You are going to recommend products, but one rule first: do not invent model numbers. That is the most common mistake AI makes with shopping advice. MY NEED: [NEED] BUDGET: [BUDGET] COUNTRY / MARKET: [MARKET] REQUIRED FIELDS PER RECOMMENDATION | Product name | Brand | Exact model number | Version/year | Category | Estimated price range | THREE TESTS PER RECOMMENDATION 1. DOES THE MODEL EXIST: is this exact model code real? If you are unsure, write "VERIFY". Do not invent. 2. IS IT CURRENT: is it still on sale, or discontinued? Has it been replaced? 3. IS IT AVAILABLE HERE: is it sold in my country? If it is an import, what is the warranty and service situation? RULES - If you do not know the model number, do not guess. Give brand plus series name and write "verify the model number". - Never present a product that may not exist as if it does. Every uncertain row carries a VERIFY marker. - Do not give a single price. Give a range and a date: "as of October 2026". - End with three lines: WHERE TO LOOK (which type of site or store), WHAT TO ASK (two questions for the seller), WHICH SPEC DECIDES IT (the single defining spec for my need). No gushing. No "best".
The most reliable approach to shopping advice: ask for product categories and spec priorities, then take the model number from the seller's page.
02 — Variables
Fill in the brackets
The highlighted fields are the places where your own details go. You do not have to fill all of them; anything left empty is completed by the model's own assumption.

03 — How to use
How to use it, step by step
- 01
Always search the model number on the seller's own site. One character difference is often a different product.
- 02
State the country. Model numbers change by region — the same product ships under different codes.
- 03
Search every VERIFY row individually, keep what you confirm and delete the rest.
- 04
Read the price range together with its date. A few months later that answer is misleading.
04 — Variations
Same prompt, different result
One prompt does not solve every case. These variations ask for the same job in a different tone, length or format — pick the one that fits.
Specs only
Do not give me product names. For my need, do this: (1) name the three technical specs that actually decide quality here, (2) state the threshold I should not go below for each, (3) give me the search terms I should use. I will choose the product myself. Need: [NEED]. Budget: [BUDGET].
The safest way to shop with AI.
Comparison table
Compare these models: [NEED]. Table: spec rows, model columns. Final row: one sentence on who each model suits. Write "?" in any cell you do not know — do not guess. Then tell me which two specs to check in the store.
Once you have a shortlist.
05 — Tips
Notes that take the result up a level
- An invented model number usually sits very close to a real one: "XYZ-4800" instead of "XYZ-4500". A single digit is the difference between a product and a fiction.
- The reliable flow is: get spec priorities from AI → filter in the store → confirm the model code with the seller.
- Recommending a discontinued product is also an error: a newer generation may exist. The "is it current" question catches it.
06 — FAQ
Frequently asked about AI Errors
Can AI really recommend products that do not exist?
Yes, and it is common in shopping advice. The model generates what a product name in that category looks like; it does not check inventory. Model number, release year and price are the highest-risk fields. That is why verifying the code with a seller is mandatory.
Which AI is more reliable for shopping?
Those with live search — Perplexity, shopping-mode ChatGPT — because they actually see product pages. Even they show stale prices and discontinued models. The rule holds: AI produces the suggestion, the seller's page provides the verification.
Why does the model number matter so much?
Because product families look identical and one character can mean different specs. Between two models from the same brand, battery life, warranty or component quality can differ. If the code the AI gave you is not real, what arrives is not what you expected.
