HP Printer Offline: Fix It in 6 Steps

Short answer

When your HP printer shows 'Offline', first restart printer and PC and clear the Windows print queue; then pin the printer by IP and disable SNMP status. For wireless issues, connect the printer to the 2.4 GHz network and re-add it with HP Smart. Most cases resolve within the first three steps.

01 — Step-by-step fix

Step-by-step fix

  1. Restart the printer and computer

Unplug the printer for 30 seconds, restart the PC, then plug the printer back in. This simple cycle alone fixes half of offline states.

  2. Clear the print queue

Open services.msc, stop the Print Spooler service, delete the files in %windir%\System32\spool\PRINTERS and start the service again. Stuck jobs make the printer appear offline.

You can also cancel pending jobs manually under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > your printer > Open print queue.

  3. Make sure the printer is added by IP

Check the printer's network info on its panel and note the IP. In Windows printer properties > Ports, confirm the port IP matches; if not, add a new Standard TCP/IP port.

  4. Pin the printer's IP address

In your router's admin panel (192.168.1.1 etc.), create a DHCP reservation to give the printer a fixed IP. A changing IP is the most common silent cause of offline errors.

  5. Disable SNMP status

In Port properties (Ports tab > Configure port) untick 'SNMP Status Enabled' and press OK. This known HP fix stops false offline reporting.

  6. On wireless, join 2.4 GHz and re-add with HP Smart

Most HP printers run on 2.4 GHz and can't see 5 GHz. Connect the printer to your 2.4 GHz network, re-add it with the HP Smart app and update drivers from HP's official site.

Tips

  • Place the printer within 1–2 walls of the router; weak signal causes drops.
  • HP Smart's diagnostics under 'Printer settings > Advanced' report the root cause.
  • Get drivers from HP's official site; third-party driver packs cause conflicts.

02 — Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

The printer is offline but wired — why?

With USB, suspect cable/interface failure; with Ethernet, a switch port or IP conflict. Try another USB port/cable or connect Ethernet directly to the router.

Is disabling SNMP status harmful?

No. SNMP status only adds extras like cartridge levels; turning it off doesn't affect printing and fixes false offline reports.

It happens on every computer or just one?

Only one PC points to that PC's driver/queue. All devices failing points to the printer's network link and IP stability.
