Modem Lights Blinking, No Internet: Step-by-Step Fix

Estimated time: ~6 min5 stepsLast verified:

Short answer

If the modem's Internet/DSL/WAN light keeps blinking instead of turning solid green, the line cannot synchronize at DSL level. In order: power-cycle the modem for 2 minutes, check the DSL/phone cable, test direct connection without a splitter, and check your ISP outage status. If the light does not stabilize within 10 minutes, open a fault ticket with your ISP.

01 — Step-by-step fix

Step-by-step fix

  1. Restart the modem (power cycle)

Unplug the modem adapter, wait 2 minutes and plug it back in. DSL sync takes 2-5 minutes; the Internet/DSL light should blink amber/red then turn solid green. Half of modem-swap cases end at this step.

  2. Check the DSL/phone cable

Unplug and reseat the cable at both the wall and the modem; look for oxidation. Plug the DSL cable directly into the wall jack, not through extension cords — long extensions are a common sync-loss cause. If you use a splitter, make sure you use the 'DSL/Modem' port.

  3. Test without the splitter

If you have a splitter for phone service, bypass it and plug the DSL cable straight into the phone jack. A faulty splitter causes phone/internet conflicts on the same line and an unstable light.

  4. Check ISP outage status

Check your ISP's official support page/social channels for regional outage notices. On fiber, outages show via the 'PON/LOS' light; a red LOS means a fiber line fault and should not be user-fixed.

  5. Open a fault ticket

If the light does not turn green within 10 minutes, open a fault ticket with your ISP using your line number. ISPs read DSL-level metrics remotely; report your modem model and light status accurately.

If neighbors have internet, the fault is on your line; if everyone is down, it is regional — check before opening a ticket.

Tips

  • Restarting the DSL modem once or twice a day preserves connection quality; overheated modems lose sync.
  • Do not place items on top of the modem; overheating is the silent cause of endless blinking.
  • Opening fault tickets via the ISP app/portal automatically attaches line metrics.

02 — Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

All modem lights are off — is it the electricity?

First make sure the adapter is firmly in the outlet and the modem; adapter failure is common. If another device works in the outlet, power is fine — the adapter needs replacing. Some lights on with no DSL means the line, not power.

Wi-Fi light is on but no internet and DSL is red — what does that mean?

Wi-Fi means the local network works; the internet side (DSL/WAN) is down. Red DSL = no line sync. Follow the modem and cable steps; if they fail, open a fault ticket.

After rain the modem lights never stabilize — why?

Moisture entering the building wiring degrades DSL quality; it clears as things dry out. If it recurs, building wiring/jack renewal is needed. Fiber is far less weather-sensitive; on fiber check the LOS light.
