STEP 01
Cancel the active subscription first
If you use ChatGPT Plus, turn off auto-renewal under Settings > Subscription. Account deletion ends the subscription anyway, but cancelling first gives a clean close for billing and refunds.

Open the Data Controls menu
On chatgpt.com, click your profile (top right) > Settings > Data Controls. Here you will find 'Delete all chats', 'Archive all chats' and 'Delete account' options.

Click 'Delete account'. OpenAI shows a permanent-deletion confirmation screen listing what will be removed (chats, files, GPTs, API keys).

Confirm the permanent link via email

Check the API platform too
If you have a separate organization on platform.openai.com, API credits and project keys remain there. Close that side as well for a full shutdown; remaining credits require contacting OpenAI support.

Is deleting chat history enough instead of deleting the account?

If privacy is only about conversations, Data Controls > 'Delete all chats' suffices and keeps the account. You can also turn off 'Improve the model for everyone'. Deleting the account is for cutting all identity and subscription ties.

Can I re-register with the same email after deletion?

After deletion completes, a new account with the same email is possible; old chats, custom GPTs and Plus history do not return. Attempting re-registration mid-process may show 'email in use'.
