  1. STEP 01

    Identify which scenario triggers it

    Does the error appear during Windows Update, while copying files or extracting a ZIP, or inside a virtual machine like VirtualBox? The fix path differs by scenario — apply the steps that match yours from step 2 onward.

  2. STEP 02

    Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

    Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and click Run next to Windows Update. Let it apply its fixes automatically and restart the PC.

    If you can't find the troubleshooter in Settings, download Microsoft's official tool from the 'aka.ms/diag_wu' link at the top of this guide.

  3. STEP 03

    Repair system files with SFC and DISM

    Open Command Prompt as administrator. Run 'dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth' first, then 'sfc /scannow'. Restart the PC when both finish.

    DISM needs an active internet connection and may take 10–20 minutes. Do not close the window before it reaches 100%.

    Temporarily disable third-party antivirus

    Real-time protection in third-party antivirus tools can trigger 0x80004005 during file operations and updates. Right-click the antivirus tray icon, disable protection for 15–30 minutes and retry the operation.

  5. STEP 05

    For copy/archive errors: re-download the file

    If the error only happens when extracting an archive, the file may be corrupt. Try opening it with an up-to-date tool like 7-Zip; otherwise download it again. When copying many files at once, note which file stops the process.

  6. STEP 06

    Reset the Windows Update cache

    In an administrator Command Prompt run: 'net stop wuauserv', 'net stop bits', 'net stop cryptsvc'. Then 'ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old' and 'ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old'. Restart the services with 'net start wuauserv', 'net start bits', 'net start cryptsvc' and retry the update.
