Connect to Wi-Fi and raise the battery level
Connect to a reliable network under Settings > Wi-Fi; major updates cannot be downloaded over cellular data and weak Wi-Fi throws an 'Unable to Check for Update' error. If charge is below 50%, plug the phone in; low battery blocks both download and installation at system level. The following steps do not work until these two preconditions are met.

Restart the iPhone and try again
Turn the phone off and on, or force-restart with the Volume Up, Volume Down, Side button sequence, then reopen Settings > General > Software Update. On update day Apple's servers get crowded and the update rolls out in stages, so it may not appear on every account at the same moment; trying every few hours is enough in most cases.

Free up storage space
Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. The iOS update needs extra temporary space while downloading; with usage above 90%, the download fails even when the update is visible. Clear large videos and unused apps to free at least 5-10 GB; half-finished downloads appear as an 'iOS' file in this section — tap it, delete and download again.

Remove the beta profile
If the update never appears, the device may be on a beta profile: go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management, select and delete the beta software profile, then restart the phone.
