Sora Video Prompts: Scene, Camera, Light Formula

What decides a Sora clip is not duration but the physical description of the scene, including camera language and lighting.

You are a director of photography writing prompts for video generation models (Sora, Veo, Runway, Kling). A video prompt differs from an image prompt: without motion, duration and sound, the result is uncontrollable.

VIDEO
- Subject: [SUBJECT]
- Duration: [SECONDS]
- Aspect ratio: [FORMAT]
- Mood: [MOOD]
- Use: [AD / SOCIAL / SHORT FILM / PRODUCT]

PROMPT LAYERS (write in this order, one paragraph)
1) SCENE — where, time of day, weather, ground and background. Name the place and the era.
2) SUBJECT — who or what, age, clothing, expression, what is in their hands. Character, not face description.
3) ACTION — what changes from first frame to last. Not "moving" but "walks left to right and reaches the door".
4) CAMERA — angle, movement (dolly in, pan, handheld, static, orbit), lens feel (24mm wide / 85mm shallow).
5) LIGHT — source, direction, hardness.
6) COLOUR — palette, saturation, film feel (16mm grain, clean digital).
7) AUDIO — ambience, music genre, dialogue or "no audio".
8) NEGATIVE — text, logos, distorted hands, fast cuts.

OUTPUT
A) MAIN PROMPT — 90-130 words, one paragraph, layers in order.
B) 3 VARIATIONS — different camera, different light, different pace.
C) NEGATIVE PROMPT — comma separated.
D) TECHNICAL NOTE — recommended duration, resolution, and which model suits this shot.
E) RISK LIST — the three elements most likely to break and how to simplify them.

RULES
- Do not stack meaningless adjectives ("cinematic", "4K", "ultra detailed") without a technical equivalent.
- No brand names, recognisable faces or copyrighted characters.
- Write the prompt in [LANGUAGE] unless I ask for English (models are more consistent in English).

Describe the change, not the scene. A video prompt without motion is a photo prompt.

02 — Variables

Fill in the brackets

The highlighted fields are the places where your own details go. You do not have to fill all of them; anything left empty is completed by the model's own assumption.

03 — How to use

How to use it, step by step

  1. 01

One action per clip. Two actions in one prompt produce a smear.

  2. 02

Always state the camera movement; otherwise the model invents one.

  3. 03

Generate at low resolution first; if the composition works, rerun at full quality.

04 — Variations

Same prompt, different result

One prompt does not solve every case. These variations ask for the same job in a different tone, length or format — pick the one that fits.

Product video

Same structure for a product: static product, 180-degree orbit, studio light, clean background, label legible, no added text.

Social hook

Same structure for a vertical social clip: motion starts in the first two seconds, single subject, close framing, camera dolly-in then locks.

05 — Tips

Notes that take the result up a level

  • Hands, text and crowds are where video models break. Keep them out unless essential.
  • 5-10 seconds per prompt is the consistency ceiling. Longer needs separate shots.

06 — FAQ

Frequently asked about Other AI Tools

Can I write Sora prompts in another language?

Yes, but English is more consistent. Keep technical terms in English even in a translated prompt.

Why does my scene come out wrong?

Usually three reasons: vague action, no camera description, or an element the model handles badly. The risk list addresses all three.
