Fridge Not Cooling: Step-by-Step Fix Guide for Arçelik, Beko and Vestel

Short answer

If your fridge is not cooling, check in this order: power and light (socket, fuse), thermostat setting (should be mid-high), door gaskets (paper test), no-frost ice build-up (check the rear panel) and condenser cleanliness (rear grille). Most cases stem from power issues, wrong thermostat or ice build-up and are user-fixable. If the compressor never runs or there is zero cooling despite working food storage, it is a gas/compressor fault and needs service. If you see an error code, note it and report with the model number.

STEP SISTEMİ

  1. STEP 01

Check power source and the interior light

If the interior light is off, the unit is not receiving power. Test the socket with another device, check the fuse and plug directly into a wall socket; do not use extension cords — the compressor draws high current and weak lines trigger protection. If the light is on but cooling is weak, it is not power; move to the next step. After a power cut the unit may wait in protection mode for up to 30 minutes; wait and recheck.

A warm, vibrating compressor (the black motor at the back) means it is running. Silent and cold means power or compressor fault.

  2. STEP 02

Set the thermostat and temperature correctly

A thermostat left at the lowest setting shows weak cooling; set it to mid-high (3-4 on most units) and wait 6-8 hours. In summer raise the setting one step as ambient temperature rises. On digital models check fridge and freezer separately: +4°C fridge and -18°C freezer are ideal. To verify real temperature on display models, place a thermometer in a cup of water and wait 8 hours.

  3. STEP 03

Test door gaskets with the paper test

Aged, leaking gaskets silently destroy cooling. Place a sheet of paper between door and body and close; if the paper slides out without resistance, the gasket leaks. Clean the gasket with warm soapy water; dirt prevents sealing. Torn or permanently stretched gaskets need replacement; original gaskets can be sourced by model number. Gasket problems are the most overlooked cause of weak cooling.

  4. STEP 04

Check no-frost ice build-up and air circulation

On no-frost units, ice on the rear evaporator panel blocks cold air from reaching the front, visibly weakening cooling. If you see a thick ice layer in the freezer, empty the unit and defrost for 24 hours with doors open. Do not push food against the back wall; evaporator channels clog. Reduce door opening frequency and avoid placing hot food. If cooling does not resume after defrost, the no-frost fan or sensor needs checking.

Never chip ice with sharp tools; puncturing evaporator pipes causes a gas leak and ruins the unit. Let ice melt naturally.

  5. STEP 05

    Fix condenser and placement conditions

A dusty rear condenser cannot shed heat and cooling weakens. Unplug the unit and brush or vacuum the condenser surface. Keep 5-10 cm behind the unit; cramped placement blocks air circulation. A unit next to an oven or a sunny window struggles with ambient heat. After correcting these, cooling visibly improves within 8-12 hours.

  6. STEP 06

Manage service timing and error codes correctly

If the compressor never runs, or there is zero cooling in the fridge section, or the panel shows an error code, the fault is part-based: gas leaks, compressors, fan motors and sensors are not repaired at home. On Arçelik and Beko units E codes (E1-E8) usually mark sensor and fan circuits; note the code and model and report to service. Within warranty apply with your invoice; gas and compressor work must be done only by authorized service.

Tips

  • Cleaning the condenser grille monthly preserves cooling efficiency and cuts power consumption.
  • Wash the door gasket with warm soapy water every three months; dirty gaskets leak cold air.
  • Raise the thermostat one step in summer; as ambient heat rises the unit works harder.

02 — Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

The fridge is not cooling but the light is on — what is wrong?

Power is fine; the problem is in the thermostat setting, gasket leak, no-frost ice or compressor circuit. Set the thermostat mid-high, test gaskets with paper and run a 24-hour defrost. If cooling does not return, compressor or gas fault exists — call service.

Is ice on the rear wall of a no-frost fridge normal?

A thin moisture layer is normal; thick ice or accumulated frost is not. Thick ice means the defrost system is not working; empty the unit and defrost for 24 hours. If it recurs, a heater or fan fault is inside and service is required.

How many hours does a fridge take to cool?

A newly installed or long-unplugged unit usually reaches target temperature within 6-12 hours; full stability can take 24. Do not fill it with food right away; an empty unit cools faster and more efficiently.
