STEP 01
Check your backups
Deletion is permanent for messages, photos and groups. Review your last backup under Settings > Chats > Chat backup; if needed, back up manually to Google Drive/iCloud. Deleting without a backup cannot be undone.
STEP 02
Open the Delete account screen
In WhatsApp: Settings > Account > Delete account on both Android and iPhone. The screen warns twice against accidental deletion; enter your country code and number correctly.
STEP 03
Confirm the number and delete
Enter your number in full international format and tap 'Delete account'. Confirm the irreversible deletion twice. The effect is immediate; you are signed out of all devices.
STEP 04
Clean up the app and cloud backups
After deletion, uninstall the app. To remove leftovers, delete the WhatsApp backup from Google Drive > Backups / iCloud > Backups; otherwise the old backup remains stored.
STEP 05
If you want to reuse the number
Re-registering the same number creates a new account: old messages and groups do not return and you are no longer in your old groups. Your phone's contact list is untouched; only the WhatsApp registration ends.

- Do not lose connectivity during deletion; an interruption may leave the deletion incomplete.

Instead of deleting, set last seen, profile photo and status visibility to 'Nobody' and clear your profile photo. To go fully silent, turn off notifications and delete the app — your account remains.
What does the 90-day rule mean after deletion?
WhatsApp states that data may take up to 90 days to fully clear from its systems, including log backups. Recovery requests are not accepted during that window; after 90 days the data is permanently removed.
