Phone Stolen: What to Do in the First Hour (IMEI Block, Line Shutdown, Remote Lock)
Independent guide — no official affiliation with the platforms mentioned.
Short answer
If your phone is stolen, within the first hour: (1) call your carrier to shut down the line, (2) in the same call request that the device's IMEI be added to the lost/stolen blacklist, (3) lock the device via Find My iPhone or Google Find My Device, (4) file a police complaint (e-Devlet in Türkiye), and (5) change passwords and revoke sessions for banking and 2FA accounts. An IMEI-blocked phone cannot work with any SIM in Türkiye.

Step-by-step fix
STEP 01
Shut the line and request an IMEI block
Call your carrier from another phone (Turkcell: 444 0535, Vodafone: 542, Türk Telekom: 444 1 999). After owner verification, close the line and in the same call ask for the device's IMEI to be added to the lost/stolen report. A blacklisted IMEI becomes unusable on every Turkish carrier regardless of SIM.
Line shutdown and IMEI blocking are different actions: if you only close the line, the thief can keep using your apps over Wi-Fi. Request both together.
STEP 02
Lock the device remotely
For iPhone, open icloud.com/find from any device and enable 'Lost Mode': the screen locks, shows your message and contact number, and keeps tracking. For Android use google.com/android/find and choose 'Secure device'. If the phone is offline, the command applies the moment it reconnects.
STEP 03
Freeze cards and wallets
If cards are saved on the device, freeze them from your bank's app or call center; Apple Pay/Google Pay users get automatic notifications to the bank. Lock transit cards in your wallet app the same way.
STEP 04
File a police complaint
Visit the nearest police station to file a report, or in Türkiye use the prosecutor complaint service on e-Devlet. The report number is required for insurance claims, IMEI block confirmation and carrier disputes. State the brand-model, IMEI and time of theft.
STEP 05
Secure your accounts
Change passwords (especially email, banking, social) from another device and use 'sign out of all sessions'. If 2FA codes arrive by SMS, closing the line cuts the flow — switch to an authenticator app where possible. Remove the stolen device's sessions from your iCloud/Google account.
STEP 06
Move to a new phone and keep tracking
If your backup is current, sign in with the same Apple/Google account on the replacement to restore data. While the phone stays in Lost Mode, location updates appear in the app; if it does not come back, confirm with the carrier that the IMEI block stays in place.
Tips
- Spend 5 minutes now noting your IMEI (*#06#) somewhere safe: nobody wants to hunt for the box during a theft, and blocking is slow without the IMEI.
- Define a contact message on your lock screen: iPhone Lost Mode and Android lock-screen text let an honest finder reach you.
- Treat remote wipe as the last resort for critical files: wiping also stops tracking. Lock first and wait 24 hours before deciding to erase.
02 — Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Can an IMEI-blocked phone ever be reactivated?
Not while the lost/stolen report stands. If the device is recovered and returned, the line owner can request removal after verification. Never remove the block until the phone is back in your hands.
What if the phone is insured?
Get the police report first, then notify the insurer within the policy window (usually 2-7 days). The report, an IMEI query printout and the invoice are standard insurer requirements.
Do SMS 2FA codes still arrive after shutting the line?
No — a closed line receives nothing. That protects accounts but also means you cannot receive codes until you move your SIM to a new device. Keep an authenticator app as a backup for critical accounts.
