P0171 Error Code: System Too Lean (Bank 1) — Causes and Fixes
Independent guide — no official affiliation with the platforms mentioned.
Short answer
P0171 means the engine's air-fuel mixture is running below target (lean): too much air or too little fuel. The most common causes in order: dirty MAF sensor, vacuum leak, low fuel pressure (clogged filter/weak pump), dirty injectors, failed O2 sensor and PCV line leak. Check order: MAF cleaning, vacuum hoses, air filter, fuel filter and pressure, O2 sensor last. Idle shaking and hesitation are classic P0171 symptoms; solving it also prevents second-generation codes like P0420 and P0300.

STEP SISTEMİ
STEP 01
Read the code logic and symptoms
The ECU continuously adjusts fuel injection based on O2 sensor feedback. In prolonged lean running the ECU's trim values cross positive limits and P0171 sets. Classic symptoms: idle shaking or fluctuation, hesitation on cold starts, delayed throttle response, changed fuel consumption. In the freeze frame, a long-term fuel trim (LTFT) of +15-25% confirms the diagnosis. 'Bank 1' means one bank on V engines; on inline engines there is a single mixture.
STEP 02
Clean the MAF sensor (most common cause)
A dirty MAF under-measures air; the ECU injects less fuel and the mixture leans. Remove the MAF from the intake, clean the sensor wire and measuring channel with MAF cleaner spray; the wire is fragile — do not touch or blow on it. Check the air filter and box gasket seat correctly; a loose filter box clamp lets unmetered air in. MAF cleaning is a 10-minute cheap operation and the first effective step in most P0171 cases.
Never use household spray, kerosene or carb cleaner on the MAF; only MAF cleaner, otherwise you permanently damage the sensor.
STEP 03
Find and fix the vacuum leak
Every unmetered air path after the MAF leans the mixture. With the engine idling, inspect and listen to vacuum hoses, the intake manifold gasket, the brake booster line and the PCV system. Spray carb cleaner lightly on suspect points: an RPM change locates the leak. A manifold gasket leak is prominent at idle, weaker at high RPM; this pattern strengthens diagnosis. After fixing the leak, fuel trims return to the normal range (±10%).
STEP 04
Check the fuel filter and pressure
If fuel arrives short, the mixture leans. Check the fuel filter replacement mileage; a clogged filter is a classic P0171 cause and economical. On petrol cars pump pressure measurement is a workshop job; low pressure questions the pump or regulator. On diesels the high-pressure pump and pressure regulator valve are measured (related to P0087). On LPG-converted cars, LPG filters should also be checked when returning to petrol. After the fuel side is fixed, trims drop visibly.
STEP 05
Evaluate injectors and the O2 sensor
Dirty injectors distort the spray pattern and reduce real delivery; injector cleaner additive can be tried over a few tanks, otherwise ultrasonic cleaning is needed. An aged O2 sensor gives wrong feedback and can hold the mixture lean; in live data if the front lambda does not oscillate quickly, the sensor is questioned. O2 replacement should use original or quality equivalents; cheap sensors regenerate the same problem quickly. An ECU software update fixes P0171 sensitivity on some makers; ask authorized service.
STEP 06
Verify and monitor after the repair
After repair, clear the code and drive 50-100 km mixed; watch fuel trims from your OBD2 app: LTFT should stay within ±10% at idle and steady speed. If the code does not return, the issue is solved. If it returns, you missed an area: repeat the spray test and check leaks before the exhaust manifold (secondary air leak feeding P0171). Running long with P0171 disturbs catalyst and engine temperature balance; do not delay.
If P0171 stays unfixed, the catalyst overheats and P0420 arrives too; when both codes appear, fix the mixture first.
Tips
- MAF cleaning and vacuum hose checks are the first two steps of P0171 on every make; do not start with expensive parts.
- Watching fuel trims from an OBD2 app is the compass of diagnosis; memorize the ±10% limit.
- If P0171 + P0420 appear together, fix the mixture first; the catalyst code most likely closes by itself.
02 — Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive with P0171?
Short-term yes, but shaking, hesitation and higher consumption make driving harder. Long-term lean mixture heats the catalyst and produces secondary faults like P0420; get it checked as soon as possible.
What is the most common cause of P0171?
Experience ranking: dirty MAF, vacuum leak, clogged fuel filter, dirty injectors, aged O2 sensor. The first three are cheap and user-checkable; starting with MAF cleaning is the highest-probability bet.
What is fuel trim and what should it be?
Fuel trim is the percentage of fuel adjustment the ECU makes based on O2 feedback. On healthy engines STFT and LTFT combined stay within ±10% at idle and steady speed. A high positive value confirms lean mixture and P0171.
