Dashboard Warning Lights Meaning: Color Codes and When You Must Stop

A red light threatens safe operation and needs an immediate stop: oil pressure, engine temperature, charging (battery), brake fluid/pressure and door-open warnings. Yellow/amber marks things needing a check that mostly allow driving: check engine, ABS, ESP, TPMS (tire pressure), DPF, fuel filter water and airbag. Green and blue are informational: light modes, signals, cruise control, ambient temperature (blue, cold indicator). A driver who knows the color logic does not panic: stops on red, plans on yellow, drives on green.

When the oil light (oilcan icon) comes on, pull over safely and shut the engine off immediately: without oil pressure the engine takes internal damage within minutes; check the level, top up if low; if the level is normal but the light persists, tow the car to service. On the temperature light, turn off A/C, open full heat and stop safely; NEVER open the coolant cap before the engine cools. If the battery/charging light stays on while driving, the charging system (alternator/belt) is faulty; electrical supports may shut down — close unnecessary consumers and plan service. The brake light is a level or handbrake warning; a low level means brake pressure risk.

The check engine light gets a code read and evaluation; a steady light allows driving, a flashing one requires stopping. ABS light: normal braking works but anti-lock is off; braking distance grows, drive carefully and go to service — winter wheel sensor dirt is a classic cause. A constantly on ESP light means stability control is disabled; drive carefully. TPMS (tire exclamation) shows pressure loss; measure tires cold and set to maker values, look for a puncture on recurring drops. These lights need planned checks, not panic.

The DPF light shows filter fill: regeneration needs 20-30 minutes of uninterrupted driving above 60 km/h; if the light starts flashing or power restriction arrives, forced regeneration happens at service. The fuel filter water light on diesels says open the filter's drain valve; water damages the engine, do not delay. The AdBlue light asks for fluid refill; when the fluid runs out the car will not start (start lock). The glow plug (coil) light flashing for seconds in cold is normal; if it stays on while driving, glow plug checks are needed. These are the lights diesel owners meet most.

The airbag light is amber but safety-priority: if it stays on, the airbag may not deploy in a crash. Common causes: the seat connector loosening under the seat (a light appearing after moving the seat is the classic pattern) or a clock spring fault (if the horn also fails, suspect it). Belt pretensioner lights are evaluated similarly. These lights do not block driving but directly affect crash safety; go to service within days. On resale, a constantly lit airbag light lowers value; solving it early is economical.

Icon details differ slightly per brand; look at the indicator section of your manual once and photograph it. All lights flashing briefly at ignition is normal (bulb check); a light that never comes on may have a dead bulb/LED — it also fails inspection.
